Imaging: Microscope Scanning Upgrades

BIOQUANT offers three Microscope Upgrade Kits which can upgrade a lab's microscope to allow live imaging and digital pathology scanning. Each kit provides a different balance of cost and automation. All kits provide the basic capacity to collect a set of overlapping images and stitch them into a calibrated digital scan for use the BIOQUANT OSTEO analysis software.

Please bear in mind that these kits are not required to use the BIOQUANT OSTEO analysis software. Images for analysis can come from these kits, from a central imaging core, or from an imaging system already set up in your own lab.

Kit 1: Automated Capture & Automated Focus

This kit uses either an upright or inverted microscope already in your laboratory and upgrades it to perform automated digital scanning of slides or well-plates.

Blue items are part of the kit. Gray items (the microscope) is already in your laboratory.

This kit includes an imaging camera, an autofocus camera, a coupler to attach them to the microscope, and an XYZ motorized stage with autofocus control.

The BIOQUANT SCAN software controls these elements to perform automated imaging of the samples. BIOQUANT SCAN uses the autofocus control to check that locate each slide and to confirm that the focus of each field of view is correct.

While the diagram at left shows an upright microscope, this kit is compatible with both upright and inverted microscopes.

Kit 2: Automated Capture and Manual Focus

This kit uses either an upright or inverted microscope already in your laboratory and upgrades it to perform automated digital scanning of slides or well-plates.

Blue items are part of the kit. Gray items (the microscope) is already in your laboratory.

This kit includes an imaging camera, a coupler to attach them to the microscope, and an XY motorized stage.

The BIOQUANT SCAN software controls these elements to perform automated imaging of the samples. The software pauses at regular intervals to allow the operator to make any necessary adjustments to the section focus. The operator can also manually pause the system to make necessary corrections.

While the diagram at left shows an upright microscope, this kit is compatible with both upright and inverted microscopes.

Kit 3: Manual Capture and Manual Focus

This kit uses an upright microscope already in your laboratory and upgrades it to perform digital scanning of slides. It is not compatible with inverted microscopes.

Blue items are part of the kit. Gray items (the microscope) is already in your laboratory.

This kit includes an imaging camera (non-cooled), a coupler to attach them to the microscope, and an XY manual encoded stage.

The operator moves the stage over the sample and collects a set of images. BIOQUANT automatically stitches these images into a single digital scan of the section.

Even though the stage is moved by hand, it still communicates to the BIOQUANT software. In this way, the software can tag each image with its XY coordinates on the section. This allows BIOQUANT to use the images for automated stitching.

Continued Support for Live Imaging

All of the kits shown here continue support the analysis of histology on a live image shown directly from the sample on the microscope. In this case, the stages provide automated tracking like when working with a digital scan. This helps ensure that measurements are confined to the interior of the Tissue Volume and that cells and labeled surfaces are not double counted.
